Business Days

Several TeamHub features — leave requests, balance calculations, and the Full Time Contractor accrual behaviour — count in business days rather than calendar days. This page explains what counts as a business day and how the count is worked out.

What Counts as a Business Day

A business day is any day that is:

  1. A working day for the leave type, and

  2. Not a public holiday or company closure day.

Both of these are configurable, so “business days” can mean something slightly different for each leave type.

Working Days

Every leave type has its own working-day schedule, set under Settings → Leave Types. It defaults to Monday to Friday, but can be adjusted — for example, a leave type used by retail or hospitality staff might run Tuesday to Saturday, and Maternity Leave defaults to all seven days of the week.

Days outside the leave type’s working-day schedule (weekends, by default) are never counted as business days, and are never deducted from a leave request or included in accrual calculations.

Note

In most cases the working-day schedule is set at the leave type level and applies to everyone using that leave type. If an individual employee genuinely works a different pattern to the rest of their team, contact support — a per-employee schedule can be configured on request.

Public Holidays and Custom Calendars

Business day counts also exclude holidays, drawn from two sources — see Calendars for more detail on how these are set up:

  • Public holiday calendar — each leave type can be linked to one or more country calendars (South Africa, Australia, Israel, Malta, United States, United Kingdom). Public holidays for the linked countries are excluded from the count.

  • Company custom calendar — any company-specific closure days (for example, a festive season shutdown) are excluded in addition to public holidays, for every leave type.

A leave type can optionally be configured to ignore holidays entirely, in which case public holidays and custom calendar days are treated as ordinary working days for that leave type’s calculations. Contact support if you’re not sure how a leave type is configured.

How the Count Is Calculated

To work out the number of business days between two dates, TeamHub steps through each day in the range and counts it only if it is both a working day and not a holiday, per the rules above. This is the same underlying calculation used to:

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did a leave request use fewer days than the date range suggests?

Weekends (or whichever days fall outside the leave type’s working-day schedule) and public holidays within the date range aren’t counted, so the deducted total will usually be lower than the raw number of calendar days.

Our office works Monday to Friday, but one leave type is behaving as if Saturday is a working day. Why?

Each leave type has its own independent working-day schedule. Check the Working days setting on that specific leave type under Settings → Leave Types.

Can a public holiday calendar be applied to only some leave types?

Yes. Public holiday calendars (and the company custom calendar) are linked per leave type, so different leave types can use different calendars, or none at all.
